A First In Turkey
The MRI system used in our hospital is a 1,5 tesla Philips Achieva with a full neuropacket. It is the first MRI used for electrophysiology within a psychiatric hospital in Turkey. MRI technology is a system that provides structural information about the patient's brain and helps to measure the flow, pressure changes, mass effects and volumetric changes of structures that may take place. The dispersion of hydrogen atoms in the brain can be detected via a high magnetic field and RF (radio frequency) waves in order to obtain information about the neural tissue.
Functional MRI- fMRI- shows the functionality and neuronal activity of the brain by measuring the changes in BOLD (blood oxygenation level-dependent) MR signal. For instance,in the case of patients with brain tumors, with the fMRI technique, combining functional and structural information for functional mapping of sensorimotor cortex is very helpful for preoperative neurosurgical planning. Cognitiveemotional tests may be given to patients during the fMRI in order to show functional brain areas before and after therapy. The test results could be interpreted with fMRI results in order to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the therapy.
There is also MRI compatible EEG system in our hospital which is utilized in order to measure both the chemical and electrical activity of the brain simultaneously. Another advanced method is Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy- MRS- in which the amount of metabolites in the brain are measured in order to diagnose metabolic disorders and provide information especially in regards to the metabolism of a tumor.
