Integration of Psychology, Neurology And Psychiatry
As a science, neurology is concerned about nervous system
disorders and psychiatry deals with affective, mental and
behavioral disorders, originating from brain. Psychology,
on the other hand, contributes to both disciplines in terms
of diagnosis and treatment. When dynamic school
dominated psychology during the first years of the 20th
century, it was psychology that was first influenced by
this development and subsequently neurology dissociated
from brain by transforming into reflexology. This artificial
dissociation lasted nearly 70 years through out the century.
Then imaging methods provided a ground for the
rapprochement of these three disciplines.
Today neurology is still getting closer with behavioral
neurology, so does psychiatry with biological psychiatry
and psychology with experimental and cognitive
psychology. More and more the brain is becoming their
common subject and focus of attention.
The NP GROUP in Turkey serves as an ideal ground for
the rapprochement of psychology, neurology and
psychiatry. In the NPISTANBUL Hospital, patients are
assessed by each of these three disciplines and results
are evaluated by consultations and case meetings. With
the help of this coordination, successful results are obtained
with accurate and early diagnosis. For instance, the NP
GROUP members routinely assess the possibility of the
Alzheimer's disease in elderly patients with depression
symptoms and Fronto-Temporal Dementia in groups of
similar ages with behavioral disorder symptoms. In such
cases, additional neuropsychological tests are also
implemented, along with the usual tests. Besides history
and test results, the ideal diagnosis is established on the
basis of the Brain Check up, comparing MR results with
the Quantitative EEG/Brain Mapping.
